Lowering the school age to gain knowledge about their rights and human rights

Commissioner for human rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova: I participate in discussions with the Ministry of education and science, the First President's Foundation, and the organizers of the Law street project, represented by Khalida and her partners, on two issues: lowering the school age to gain knowledge about their rights and human rights and the possibility of clarifying the relevant discipline "Man and society", as well as the introduction of optional activities. I hope that we will work out concrete solutions.

Friends! At this difficult time, I am happy to share positive news!

On June 24, at the invitation of Vice-Minister of education and science asylova Bibigul Amangeldinovna and Deputy Chairman of the Committee for the protection of children's rights of the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan Ovechkina Yulia Rulsanovna, I and my colleagues-experts in the field of legal education for schoolchildren took part in an online meeting on anti-bullying and cyberbullying.

During the meeting, we shared the success of the Street Law Kazakhstan project in the field of legal education of schoolchildren and training them in useful skills of protection from violence and conflict resolution. We also talked about the anti-bullying tools we have developed for schools, teachers, students and parents that can help create a safe and friendly environment in schools.

Experts Meirgul alpysbaeva (UNESCO), Saule Isabekova (UNODC) and Elena Bondarenko (NARKHOZ) shared various existing approaches and developed tools for teaching human rights in schools, starting from the 1st grade. One of these tools is the comics and Board games on human rights "Education for Justice", as well as the animated series about human rights and inclusion for schoolchildren "Zorby":

My co-coordinator of Street Law, Gulshat Takisheva, spoke about our recent human rights essay contest for schoolchildren, "My rights - my wealth", which showed that children like to study human rights, they believe in justice, and that the highest value of the state should be the person, his life, rights and freedoms. My colleague, scholar Zhanar temirbekova, an expert on gender rights and gender equality and a specialist in the development of educational programs, suggested at the initial stage to introduce legal education for schoolchildren in the framework of class hours and electives, starting from primary school.

Commissioner for human rights Elvira abilkhasimovna Azimova noted the importance of introducing legal education in the school curriculum at least from the 3rd grade (9-year-old students), since children have the right to participate in separate family and legal relations from the age of 10.

We thank the organizers for a productive meeting, where each speaker was able to talk in detail about the scope of their activities on legal education for schoolchildren and share tips.

We are happy to cooperate with the Committee for the protection of children's rights and the Ministry of education and science on children's rights and hope that our joint projects will help to contribute to strengthening the protection of our children from violence, bullying and cyberbullying anywhere in our country.
