The comment of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan E.Azimova on the amnesty announced in the Message of the Head of State K.Tokaeva

Today, during the session of the Parliament, the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his Message announced the decision to hold a partial amnesty for the participants of the January events.

This decision received a positive response among the human rights community and the accused and convicted themselves.

The January events are a great tragedy for us, and no one justifies the actions of real offenders.

Unfortunately, a large number of people found themselves in a similar situation for the first time. They participated in mass riots more under the influence of the crowd and in connection with existing social problems. Many of them realized their guilt and repented.

The decision on amnesty is not only the President's exercise of his constitutional right, an act of humanity and trust in fellow citizens. We must trust our people.
