The Ombudsman and human rights activists discussed the constitutional amendments submitted to the republican referendum

On June 2, an online discussion was held with the participation of the Ombudsman and participants of the National Preventive Mechanism in connection with the constitutional amendments submitted to the republican referendum. It will be held on June 5, 2022. The participants of the meeting exchanged views on the proposed amendments and the upcoming legislative work on their implementation. Recall that the adoption of amendments to the Constitution will entail amendments to existing laws and the adoption of three new constitutional laws - on the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor's Office, and the Commissioner for Human Rights.

During the discussion, human rights defenders voiced recommendations to ensure the effectiveness of the upcoming legislative process, and a broad discussion of draft laws that will be developed in the implementation of constitutional amendments. Human rights activists outlined the main points that the developers of draft laws should pay attention to in order to prevent the abuse of authority by state bodies in the implementation of new constitutional mechanisms.

The participants of the meeting exchanged views on the Government's adopted second plan on further measures in the field of human rights and the rule of law. Human rights activists proposed an algorithm of actions that strengthens the new mechanism for protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens and expressed their willingness to participate in its development and discussion.
