On the meeting of the Ombudsman with the Freedom Now delegation

Nur-Sultan, On April 6, the Commissioner for Human Rights of Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova met with the executive director of the NGO «Freedom Now» Marana Turner and the Director for the promotion of human rights issues from this organization Matthew Shaaf.

The issues of human rights protection, fulfillment, and compliance with the obligations assumed were discussed at the meeting. E.Azimova spoke about her activities, the legal framework governing the status of the National Human Rights Institute in Kazakhstan represented by the Commissioner and his staff, cooperation with non-governmental organizations, and ongoing work in connection with the January events.

Representatives of the organization were also interested in the human rights situation concerning citizens detained in connection with criminal charges or serving a criminal sentence by a court verdict.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to continue the dialogue, including with the participation of other non-governmental organizations.
