On May 5, 2021, the deputies of the Mazhilis approved the draft amendments to the Constitutional Law "On Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan". The draft law was developed to implement the decisions of the Head of State.
The bill provides for:
- elections of mayors of cities of regional significance, villages, settlements, rural districts and participation in them as candidates not only representatives of political parties but also self-nominees who have received the necessary number of signatures in their support;
- reduction of the threshold for political parties to enter the Mazhilis of the Parliament from 7% to 5%;
- inclusion of the "Against all" column in the ballots (previously this column was excluded).
Thus, the draft law expands the mechanisms for the implementation of the constitutional guarantees of the participation of the Kazakh citizen in the management of the state and the exercise of his right to vote and be elected.
