On November 4, 2020, the Commissioner for human rights in Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova participated in the Fifth meeting of the Steering Committee of the UNODC Regional Programme for Central Asia (2015-2020).
The meeting was organized by the Regional Office for Central Asia of the United Nations Office on drugs and crime (UNODC).
During the meeting, a report on the main achievements of the implementation of the Regional Program for Central Asia in 2019-2020 was presented. The plan for the next cycle of its implementation (for 2021-2025) was also discussed.
The Regional Programme for the Central Asian States is a strategy of support and partnership on the part of UNODC in countering crimes against the individual as an important condition for preserving regional and national security and protecting human and civil rights and freedoms.
The meeting noted that the forced return of migrants (deportation) during the pandemic increases the vulnerability of citizens of this group since many of them have lost their jobs and are experiencing financial difficulties.
