The international WMI code for vehicles is now assigned in Kazakhstan

This is a significant achievement and a real step in strengthening the country's sovereignty. Because previously, Kazakhstani manufacturers of auto and special equipment had to turn to intermediary services of various foreign companies on a paid basis.

 

Due to the fact that vehicles are a source of increased danger, they require a conformity assessment. Each car model is marked with letters and numbers with the international vehicle manufacturer code WMI (World Manufacturers Identification), which allows you to identify the manufacturer anywhere in the world if necessary. Currently, on behalf of the International organization for standardization (ISO), the society of automotive Engineers of the United States SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) registers and maintains a Global database of WMI codes.

During the Soviet Union, vehicle conformity assessment was carried out through a single body. Since the collapse of the USSR, each country has been looking for its own ways to obtain a conformity assessment.

 

In search of a solution to this issue, when developing the draft law on standardization, the Committee for technical regulation and Metrology made a proposal on the need to introduce a procedure for assigning the international WMI code in Kazakhstan. The deputies of the Republic of Kazakhstan supported this initiative. Thus, with the entry into force of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "on standardization", domestic vehicle manufacturers can receive the WMI code in Kazakhstan free of charge.

 

To do this, vehicle manufacturers should contact the technical regulation and Metrology Committee.

The law defines the competent organization for assigning WMI as the Technical Secretariat of the Kazakhstan Institute of standardization and certification (hereinafter Kazinst).

The technical Secretariat will conduct a comprehensive review of the application for compliance with the Rules for assigning international identification codes and assign the WMI code in accordance with the established procedure.

The first applications have already been reviewed by the Kazinst Technical Secretariat. And to date, positive conclusions and certificates of assignment of the international identification code have been issued to two Kazakhstani enterprises-manufacturers of vehicles - "Town Machinery" LLP (production of utility vehicles) and "BATYS TRAILER" LLP (production of trailers).
