Kazakhstan has presented plans to achieve carbon neutrality

Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Trade and Integration Bakhyt Sultanov took part in the work of the International Economic Forum of the member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States "Green Agenda in the CIS countries: Cooperation in development".

He said that the Strategy being developed by Kazakhstan to achieve carbon neutrality of Kazakhstan until 2060 will become a guideline on the way to deep decarbonization of the economy and will lay the foundation for further actions to achieve the goal.

"According to experts, in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, the energy intensity of Kazakhstan's GDP by 2030 should be reduced by 38.9%, the share of coal in the structure of electricity production will have to decrease due to the natural retirement of capacity from the current 68.9% to 40.1%," B. Sultanov said.

At the same time, measures will be taken to develop electric transport, sustainable agriculture and other sectors of the economy. In order to strengthen international cooperation and reduce negative consequences, norms on adaptation to climate change have been implemented in Kazakhstan's national legislation.

This will create an effective system to increase resilience to climate change at the local level. Sultanov also said that Kazakhsstan is working to bring the national emissions trading system closer to the European one within the framework of several international projects.

After its completion, the republic will have access to the international carbon market. The possibility of bringing Kazakhstan's emissions trading system closer to the European one will encourage domestic reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to achieve commitments under the Paris Agreement.

To ensure high competitiveness, Kazakhstan strives to adhere to global global trends, seeking the necessary investments for this. "The world today needs decisive actions by countries. Solving the global problem related to climate change requires the active participation and involvement of all stakeholders, therefore, the achievement of this goal directly depends on our joint and fruitful work," B. Sultanov said.
