Prospects оf creating the EAEU common market of organic produce

On August 20 in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyz Republic, the Prime Ministers of the Eurasian Economic Union member-states have approved the Roadmap for the development of the EAEU common market of organic produce.

It is planned to develop an international agreement that will regulate the recognition of organic produce as well as the unhindered trade of organic produce across the EAEU member-states.

To this end, it will be obligatory to harmonize and unify the requirements of national legislations for the organic products labeling and the accompanying documents. The EAEU common market of organic produce will also consider the mutual certification recognition of production systems.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the world market for the production of organic agricultural products exceeds 106 billion. euro.

However, among the EAEU member-states organic products account for only 1% of the total area of plowed territories.

In order to increase the share of organic products in the exports of the EAEU member-states, the Roadmap facilitates development of appropriate recommendations.

Within the framework of international cooperation, it is planned to sign the Memorandum of Cooperation among the Eurasian Economic Commission, the International Federation of the Movement for Organic Agriculture (IFOAM) and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FIBL) by 2023.

Also, it is planned to develop proposals for the formation of official statistical information in order to take into account production, mutual trade turnover among the EAEU member-states, and organic products trade with third countries.

The organic produce market is planned to be developed by 2025.
