On a meeting of the Interagency Commission on International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Treaties

NUR-SULTAN, June 1, 2020 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an online meeting of the Interagency Commission on International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Treaties (IAC). The aim of the online meeting was to review and improve the implementation of Kazakhstan’s international legal obligations in the field of humanitarian law and human rights.

During the meeting, the IAC worked through the implementation of the recommendations following the defense of the Third National Report of the Republic of Kazakhstan as part of the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights, as well as preparations for the submission of the third periodic report of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN Human Rights Committee and the defense of the combined eighth, ninth and tenth periodic reports to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The meeting participants examined in detail the assessments and prospects for implementing the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council Special Procedures (special rapporteurs, independent experts, working groups) and the issues of Kazakhstan joining the UN international human rights treaties.

Noting the importance of cooperation with the UN in such an important area as human dimension, representatives of Kazakh government agencies agreed to coordinate in joint efforts to fulfil Kazakhstan’s international obligations in the field of human rights and freedoms. At the same time, they emphasized that establishing the Coordinating Council under the Presidential Administration in January to develop recommendations for reports of the Republic of Kazakhstan on human rights protection will facilitate the constructive interaction of government agencies and relevant non-governmental organizations on human rights issues.
