Kazakhstan condemned Korea’s launch of the missile and called for a dialogue

At the meeting of the UN Security Council on August 29, Kazakhstan condemned the launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea.

“We stand in full solidarity with Japan, since the missile flew over its neighboring territories also, endangering air and sea vessels. The fact that today, on the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, we are witnessing an ongoing increase in the threat of nuclear weapons is of particular concern for us”, said the Kazakh side.

Japan and Kazakhstan are among the countries most affected by the devastating consequences of nuclear testing and weapons. Therefore, Kazakhstan understands the concern of the government and the people of Japan. The speech expresses gratitude to the Japanese partners for the assistance rendered within the medical sector in rehabilitation programs in Kazakhstan to the victims of the humanitarian cost of nuclear weapons tests.

Kazakhstan's position on the agenda item “Nonproliferation/Democratic People's Republic of Korea” is well known, it is consistent and balanced, said the Kazakh representative. Kazakhstan condemns the actions of Pyongyang and stands for stopping all tests of nuclear weapons and launches of ballistic missiles. Democratic People's Republic of Korea must fully comply with the requirements of the sanctions resolutions of the UN Security Council. Attention is drawn to the need for all parties to show restraint and unacceptability of military solutions.

In this situation, dialogue and confidence-building measures are of crucial significance. Any initiatives, including “double freeze,” should be taken into consideration as a possible initial option for settlement of the process. It is also necessary to maintain the unity and authority of the UN Security Council on this issue.

At the meeting of the Security Council Kazakhstan spoke in support of the statement of the President of the Council with condemnation of the launch of the ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
