Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan following the session of the UN Disarmament Commission

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan welcomes the results of the resumed session of the UN Disarmament Commission, held on April 4-21, 2022 in New York after three-year hiatus. The UN member states have demonstrated a positive attitude towards promoting issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, the practical implementation of transparency and confidence-building measures in order to prevent an arms race in outer space.

The delegation of Kazakhstan initiated the inclusion in the final document of the Commission of provisions on minimizing the threat of developing new types of nuclear weapons, limiting the possibility of modernizing existing nuclear arsenals, and a provision on the importance of supporting victims and affected communities of nuclear tests.

Kazakhstan consistently advocates the use of outer space exclusively for peaceful purposes and the development of norms for responsible behavior in outer space.

For reference: The UN Disarmament Commission was established in 1978 at the first special session of the UN General Assembly on disarmament. The Commission is an advisory body subordinate to the UN General Assembly, and its functions include reviewing and making recommendations on various problems in the field of disarmament.
