Washington, October 11, 2024 – in light of the recent nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant, which marked a significant step in Kazakhstan's democratic development, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the United States, Yerzhan Ashikbayev, delivered a lecture to master students at Georgetown University.
During his address, the Ambassador emphasized that the referendum represented an important milestone in modernizing the country's energy infrastructure and serves as another example of the formation of a new socio-political culture in line with the concept of a “Listening State.”
Ambassador Ashikbayev shared Kazakhstan's history on non-proliferation, the actions to combat climate change, and key aspects of the country's nuclear energy sector, highlighting the importance of this field for sustainable development and energy security.
He highlighted that Kazakhstan, with the world’s largest uranium reserves and as one of its leading exporters, is actively advancing its nuclear industry in compliance with international safety and environmental standards.
“Despite the economic attractiveness of traditional energy resources, Kazakhstan is dedicated to the responsible use of energy and has implemented a Strategy for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2060. The country is poised to become a global leader in promoting safe and innovative solutions for diversifying energy resources,” he stated.
The lecture concluded with an interactive session in which Georgetown University students and faculty posed questions to the Ambassador regarding Kazakhstan's energy policy, its role in the global economy, and plans to enhance the use of renewable energy sources.
