The Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan is presented in the IAEA

Vienna, March 17, 2025 – The delegation led by the Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Atomic and Energy Supervision and Control of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, Azat Sarpekov, presented the national report at the 8th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management.

In his speech, the head of the Kazakhstan delegation informed the IAEA Member States about the fulfilment of international obligations under the Joint Convention, as well as the national policy and practices for managing spent fuel and radioactive waste.

IAEA leadership took positive note on Kazakhstan's national report and its efforts to fulfil the provisions of the Joint Convention. Representatives of the contracting parties suggested that Kazakhstan continue to improve national legislation in the field of nuclear energy and adhere to IAEA recommendations on nuclear and radiation safety.

Particular emphasis was placed on the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to establish a nuclear cluster and construct three nuclear power plants. It was noted that, as part of the long-term energy security strategy, the Head of State announced the decision to create the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan. This step reflects the state's increased focus on the development of nuclear energy, as well as the need to strengthen the institutional framework for implementing large-scale projects in this field.

The meeting of the contracting parties to the Joint Convention will continue in Vienna until March 28.
