Kazakhstan strengthens cooperation in the field of peaceful use of outer space at the UN

Vienna, February 4, 2025 – The Kazakh delegation led by the Deputy Chairman of the Aerospace Committee of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alan Kazkenov participated in the 62nd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the UN Committee on Outer Space Affairs (COPUOS).

The head of the Kazakh delegation briefed COPUOS Member States on national experience in integrating space technologies into the national economy and natural resources management, as well as in using satellite observation to solve existing and emerging problems.

Mr. Kazkenov also noted that in order to prevent the consequences of emergency situations, Kazakhstan has developed and implemented the TASQYN early warning and flood forecasting platform. The platform uses space, hydrological and meteorological data, as well as data from the global flood warning system GloFAS, which makes it possible to predict dangerous rises in river levels 30 days in advance and to model possible flood zones. In this context, Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to share its experience in the development and use of the TASQYN platform, and to extend its coverage to other countries within the UN.

The participants of the COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee were also informed of plans to develop a national space situation monitoring system, including the segment for the observation and tracking of space objects. Considering the special importnce of this issue, Kazakhstan proposed to create a UN Regional Coordination Center for the tracking of near-space objects using ground-based observatories.

The head of the Kazakh delegation invited the COPUOS Member States and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs to participate in the International Conference "Space Days Kazakhstan" to be held in Astana in September 2025.

During the UN Conference, the Kazakh delegation held a series of meetings with the Director of the UNOOSA Aarti Holla-Maini and heads of other delegations to discuss the functioning of the UN-SPIDER Regional Support Office in Kazakhstan and the expansion of cooperation in the field of space exploration.
