Vienna, September 20, 2024 – The 68th session of the IAEA General Conference reviewed the implementation of the resolution on the Restoration of Sovereign Equality of Member States in the IAEA, which was adopted last year at the initiative of Kazakhstan.
The Agency's Member States acknowledged the positive outcomes resulting from the implementation of the goals and objectives set forth in this document, particularly in addressing the issue of allocation and equal representation of all states in the organization's decision-making bodies. Notable achievements included the acceptance of Bahrain, Nepal, and Brunei Darussalam into the relevant regional groups, as well as the completion of the ratification processes by Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan for the Amendment to Article 6 of the IAEA Statute.
Presenting the agenda item initiated by Kazakhstan, Permanent Representative Mukhtar Tileuberdi emphasized the importance of maintaining the positive momentum and ensuring the effectiveness of the multilateral mechanism to expedite the earliest possible distribution of countries into regional groups. Additionally, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan proposed a careful consideration of alternative options for nominations to the Board of Governors and the Bureau of the General Conference, in accordance with the provisions of the IAEA Statute.
During the discussions, Kazakhstan’s significant role and contribution to the IAEA’s activities over the past 30 years of its membership were highlighted. Kazakhstan's involvement in the IAEA’s decision-making bodies is particularly relevant in the context of future prospects for the development of nuclear energy, including the construction of a nuclear power plant.
At the conclusion of the session, Ambassador Mukhtar Tileuberdi urged the President of the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference and the Agency Secretariat to ensure the priority implementation of the Kazakh resolution and to maintain this agenda item until its full implementation.
