The priorities of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly were discussed in Vienna

Vienna, September 5, 2024 – During a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pia Kauma, delivered a speech supporting the Maltese chairmanship in its efforts to address key issues on the organization's agenda.

Pia Kauma emphasized the importance of the early appointment of new heads of OSCE institutions and highlighted the need for consensus on the budget and future chairpersonships after 2025. In her view, these steps will ensure the effective operation of the OSCE Troika mechanism.

The President also briefed the Permanent Council on the results of the Parliamentary Assembly's annual session, which took place in Bucharest in July this year.

The Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the OSCE, Mukhtar Tileuberdi, congratulated Pia Kauma on her re-election as President of the Parliamentary Assembly and expressed satisfaction with the attention given to Central Asia in the Bucharest Declaration. The impact of the climate crisis on the socio-economic and political stability of the region was particularly emphasized.

In addition, Ambassador Tileuberdi welcomed the adoption of a resolution aimed at addressing the effects of climate change and water scarcity in Central Asia, stressing the importance of regional cooperation and parliamentary dialogue in tackling these issues.

The Kazakh diplomat also expressed gratitude for the support of the global initiative by Kazakhstan and France to hold the "One Water" summit, set to take place this month, as well as Kazakhstan’s initiative to organize a Regional Climate Summit under the auspices of the United Nations in 2026 and to establish a Project Office on Climate Issues and Green Energy in Almaty. These initiatives will help strengthen the regional approach to addressing climate challenges and promoting green energy.
