Kazakhstan prepares to chair the second session of the NPT PrepCom

28 May 2024, Vienna - A thematic seminar on the second session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was held at the United Nations Office at Vienna.

This seminar is organized by the Missions of Austria, Kazakhstan and Switzerland for all Vienna-based missions and interested staff of international organizations in the format of an informal discussion platform. The main objective of the event is to contribute to the success of the second session of the PrepCom to be held in Geneva from July 22 to August 2, 2024 under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan (Akan Rakhmetullin, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has been appointed to chair the PrepCom).

Addressing the seminar participants, Ambassador Mukhtar Tileuberdi, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to International Organizations in Vienna, noted that the NPT regime is increasingly being tested in the context of a complex and unpredictable geopolitical situation in the world. "A critical moment has come when we must all rally around a common goal - to preserve and ensure the effectiveness and reliability of the NPT, which has been and remains the cornerstone of the international security architecture and the global non-proliferation regime," the Kazakh Ambassador said.

He also noted that, since taking office, Chairman Akan Rakhmetullin has engaged in extensive consultations with all stakeholders in key multilateral fora in New York, Vienna and Geneva in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of priorities and concerns in all three pillars of the NPT.

At the seminar, participants exchanged views on substantive issues for the upcoming second session of the PrepCom. They expressed their willingness to work constructively and to support the Chair in his efforts to finalize the outcome document of the second session of the PrepCom.
