IAEA Member States highlight priorities for ICONS-2024

Vienna, 20 February 2024 - In preparation for the upcoming IAEA International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS-2024), the first meeting of the Open-ended Working Group to adopt the Ministerial Declaration was held under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan and Australia.

In an in-depth exchange of views, the representatives of the IAEA Member States outlined the main priorities in the field of nuclear security and discussed the methodology for the preparation of the final document of the Conference.

The Parties noted the importance of updating the text of the Declaration to take into account modern scientific and technological developments, the possibilities of artificial intelligence and the need to ensure nuclear security in exceptional circumstances.

IAEA Member State delegations will continue substantive discussions during the next rounds of negotiations in the OEWG.
