In the memory of Soviet soldiers who liberated the city of Vienna

On occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Vienna liberation from fascism a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Central square of Schwarzenbergplatz on April 13, 2020. Representatives of the Embassies of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan attended the ceremony. The Kazakh delegation, in connection with the restrictive measures of the Federal Government of Austria to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, was headed by the Defence attaché of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Austria, Colonel Ruslan Zhakupov.

The monument of Soviet soldiers, symbolizing the liberation from Nazism, was constructed in 1945.

In the battle for the Austrian capital, about 14 thousand Soviet soldiers and officers sacrificed their lives, including more than a thousand Kazakh soldiers. In total, about 1.5 million people left Kazakhstan for the front during the war, and almost half of them did not return home.

Kazakhstan will always remember the heroic and tragic events of those days. It is very important that Austria respects the memory of Soviet soldiers who, at the cost of their lives, brought peace and independence to the Austrian people, liberating Europe from the Nazi troops.
