Vienna, November 18, 2022 – The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alibek Bakayev, presented his credentials to the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Robert Floyd.
During the conversation, the CTBTO Executive Secretary emphasized the leading role of Kazakhstan in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and its support in promoting the early entry into force of the Treaty. With particular warmth, he recalled his first foreign visit in the capacity of the Executive Secretary of the CTBTO in August last year in Kazakhstan, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of the closure of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia. He shared the outcome of the high-level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly in September 2022, dedicated to promoting the International Day against Nuclear Tests, which was initiated by Kazakhstan in 2009.
The head of the Kazakh diplomatic mission confirmed Kazakhstan's intentions to deepen cooperation with the Organization. Stressed the role of the CTBT as a key pillar of the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as well as an effective and practical measure to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world. Discussed the possibilities of expanding the Kazakh segment in the CTBTO International Monitoring System as our country's contribution to the verification and control of banning nuclear tests.
Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue joint work on the universalization of the Treaty and its early entry into force to create a safer world for future generations.
