Kazakhstan has begun mass production of its own QazVac (QazCovid-In) vaccine against COVID-19. The shipment of the first batch – 50,000 doses of Kazakhstani vaccine delivered to all regions of the country on April 23, 2021.
The QazVac (QazCovid-in) was developed by the Kazakhstani Research Institute for Biological Safety and presented in early April 2021.
In June 2020 the National Center for Expertise of Medicines and Medical Devices, Ministry of Health, Republic of Kazakhstan, recognized positive research results of QazVac (QazCovid-in). In September 2020 stage 1 clinical trials began on 44 volunteers. The vaccine had 100% efficacy and proved to be highly effective and safe. Stage 2 clinical trials began in October 2020 with almost 200 volunteers involved. The vaccine once again showed high immunogenicity with 96% efficacy. The participants of the first two stages have developed immunity to COVID-19 with no major side-effects reported. Stage 3 clinical trials began in December 2020 and to be completed by July 2021. 3,000 people volunteered and vaccinated by the QazVac (QazCovid-in).
According to the report of the National Center for Expertise of Medicines and Medical Devices, Ministry of Health, Republic of Kazakhstan, the QazVac (QazCovid-in) vaccine is sufficiently clean, effective and safe for administration. The vaccine is made entirely from virion. It contains the entire spectrum of proteins that can be found inside the virus. Therefore, it is expected that the QazVac (QazCovid-in) can resist any virus that has undergone a mutation. It can be stored at temperature of 2°C to 8°C for up to one year in a freezer.
