Minsk, August 27–30, 2021 – The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Belarus, with the assistance of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States organized an exhibition dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition held in the headquarters of the CIS Executive Committee was attended by representatives of the Commonwealth’s participating states, who took the event with great interest.

The photo exhibition presents unique photos and copies of historical documents, including the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. A video clip containing rare video materials about the history of the closure of the landfill and Kazakhstan's efforts in the international arena in the field of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons was also shown.

Kazakhstan has become the first state in world history to close a nuclear test site. This unprecedented act inspired the UN General Assembly to proclaim August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
