Nauryz - A Celebration of Renewal and Unity

Nauryz - A Celebration of Renewal and Unity

Lisbon, 27 April 2025 - A festive event marking the celebration of Nauryz and the forthcoming Unity Day of the People of Kazakhstan was held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, located some 6,000 kilometres from Astana.

Organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the active support of the local Kazakh community, the gathering brought together members of the diaspora, students, and Portuguese friends with a keen interest in Kazakhstan’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Welcoming the attendees, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador, Jean Galiev, remarked: “Nauryz marks the beginning of the year, and unity is the foundation of a nation.” He emphasised that this ancestral wisdom reminds us that, with the arrival of spring, nature is renewed, hearts are opened, and communities are brought together. He further noted that the motto “Our strength is in unity” reflects the national ethos of solidarity and mutual support.

The warm and convivial atmosphere of the event blended elements of both traditional and contemporary culture. One of the highlights was the ancient ceremony of "Tusau Kesu" - the symbolic cutting of the child’s bindings, representing their first steps into life. Young participants of a children's drawing competition on the theme “Nauryz in the Hearts of the Younger Generation” were also recognised and awarded prizes.

A particularly poignant moment was the ceremonial planting of an apple tree, a universal symbol of new life, peace, friendship, and hope. As President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has noted: “Nauryz is an integral part of Kazakhstan’s ancient traditions. [...] In keeping with our people’s noble customs, we plant trees, open springs, and beautify our surroundings on this day.”

The celebrations also featured sporting competitions and a concert programme prepared by members of the Kazakh community. Guests enjoyed traditional melodies, instrumental compositions performed on the dombra and flute, and a graceful performance of the ancient dance Kamazhai, showcasing the vibrancy and depth of Kazakh culture.

The event concluded with a traditional Kazakh "dastarkhan", embodying the nation’s spirit of hospitality and friendship.

Held during the 30th anniversary year of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, the celebration strengthened the cohesion of the multicultural Kazakh community in Portugal and helped to reinforce cultural ties between Kazakhstan and Portugal.
