Kazakhstan presented its initiative at the annual meeting of the OPCW States Parties

The Hague, 27 November 2024 - Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of the Netherlands - Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Kairat Abdrakhmanov addressed the Conference of States Parties and expressed unwavering support for the activities of this authoritative international organization represented by the Executive Council and the Technical Secretariat. Kazakhstan's commitment to the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the achievement of the common goal of building a world free of chemical weapons was emphasized.

The attention of the participants was drawn to the initiative of the Kazakh leadership to institutionalize another major global document - the Biological Weapons Convention - by establishing the International Biological Safety Agency.

Delegates of the largest forum uniting 193 states were informed about the strong legislation developed in Kazakhstan in the field of chemical and biological security and export control and the established national export control system, which fully complies with international standards. At the same time, Kazakhstan has fulfilled all requirements for joining multilateral export control regimes, including those necessary to join the Australia Group, and in this regard, K. Abdrakhmanov called on international partners to support Kazakhstan's application.

In addition, it was noted in his speech that the OPCW should remain at the forefront of scientific and technological progress, and in this regard it is necessary to carefully study and monitor new challenges and take advantage of opportunities offered by the latest technological advances. Appreciation was expressed for the work of the Center for Chemistry and Technology in promoting the safe use of chemicals, which provides an opportunity to train and upgrade the skills of Kazakhstani specialists.

Support was expressed for the inclusion of a gender perspective as a cross-cutting element at all levels of the Organization and for the promotion of programmes aimed at stimulating appropriate education in science and technology among women.

The work of the 29th Conference of the States Parties will continue this week to take decisions on setting the OPCW' strategic directions.
