Geneva, 23 February 2022 – Kazakhstan’s delegation led by Vice-Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan Berik Kamaliev took part in the Ministerial segment on ‘75 Years of the Inland Transport Committee: Connecting Countries and Driving Sustainable Mobility, which was held as part of the 84th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee.
In his speech, the head of the Kazakhstan delegation underlined that Kazakhstan pays great attention to the development of its transport sector and the transit potential of transport corridors crossing the territory of the country, including through introducing innovations and new technologies. Kazakhstan has established a legal framework for the transport industry and created a favourable competitive environment for transport services.
The representative of Kazakhstan stressed that over the past 15 years, about 35 billion U.S. dollars had been invested in the country’s transport industry. The total length of highways at the national, regional, and district levels is about 100 thousand kilometers. Given the developed infrastructure, 11 international transit corridors, including five railway corridors and six automobile corridors, cross the country’s territory. The Kazakhstan government plans to ensure the passage of 2 million transit containers in 2025.
As a result of the meeting, Kazakhstan joined the Ministerial Resolution recognizing and validating the long-standing work and accomplishments of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee and its role in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva Tatiana Valovaya, Executive Secretary of UNECE Olga Algayerova, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt, Secretary-General of the International Road Transport Union Umberto De Pretto, and some 50 transport ministers and leaders from over 90 countries participated in the anniversary event.
The Inland Transport Committee, established in 1947, is the highest policy-making body of UNECE in the field of transport, which provides a unique intergovernmental forum to negotiate and adopt international legal instruments on inland transport.
