Kazakhstan delivered a statement at the session of the Conference on Disarmament on the topic of Nuclear Disarmament Verification

On may 11th the Permanent Representative Zhanar Aitzhanova addressed the session of the Conference on Disarmament on the topic of nuclear disarmament verification.

In her statement, the representative of Kazakhstan stressed the importance of two recent events - the extension of the new START Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States and the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons – in the context of nuclear verification. Russia and the United States accumulated vast experience in monitoring and verification measures under START Treaty which creates a solid technical and practical foundation for any future verification efforts. It should be noted that Kazakhstan has been part of the disarmament process as a state which inherited on its territory a significant nuclear arsenal and successfully met its international obligations by removing nuclear weapons and eliminating military infrastructure.

State parties to the TPNW started discussing ways to create an international authority or authorities to verify the irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons programs. The CTBTO could play an important role in any future verification mechanism.  Adoption of FMCT - one of the four core issues of the Conference - remain a prerequisite for effective nuclear disarmament verification.

The Permanent Representative underlined that Kazakhstan supports and participates in the work of the UN Group of Governmental Experts to consider the role of verification in advancing nuclear disarmament.

Kazakhstan's readiness to contribute to this process stems from its conviction that effective verification is a key element to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.
