Kazakhstan headed one of the bodies of the CTBTO

Vienna, March 26, 2021 - The representative of Kazakhstan was appointed as the head of one of the governing bodies of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna. General Director of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan Erlan Batyrbekov took the position of the Chairman of the Working Group "B" of the CTBTO for the period from 2021 to 2024.

Kazakhstan achievement was the result of a difficult competition, during which the representatives of Norway and Paraguay withdrew their candidacies, recognizing the merits and consistent policy of our country in the matter of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.  This position will allow our country to regulate inspection activities for conducting nuclear explosions in the world.  In total, the CTBTO International Monitoring System includes 302 stations from 185 countries of the world.

It is quite symbolic that Kazakhstan headed one of the key bodies of the CTBTO in the year of the 30th anniversary of Independence and the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site.
