Kazakhstan is interested in studying the Swiss experience in the field of radioactive waste disposal

Bern, October 20, 2023 - Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Switzerland Kairat Sarzhanov visited the Grimsel Underground Research and Development Center (Grimsel Test Site) and met with Matthias Braun, CEO of the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (NAGRA), and Ingo Blechschmidt, Director of the Center.

During the visit to the research center, located at a depth of 450-500 meters, Swiss experts familiarized with a wide range of NAGRA projects on radioactive waste geological disposal and plans to build a repository in deep geological formations.

In his turn, the Kazakhstani diplomat, noting the uniqueness of the facility and the projects implemented jointly with international partners, noted the practical significance and relevance of research in the nuclear power industry, expressing the interest of the Kazakhstani side in sharing experience and best practices in this area.
