Kazakh 19th-century wall tapestries undergo expert assessment in Bern

Bern, 1 December 2025 – With the support of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Switzerland and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, Director of the National Azerbaijan Carpet Museum Amina Melikova and specialist Ilaha Bekhbudova carried out an assessment of the 19th-century Kazakh silk and velvet wall tapestries from the collection of the renowned Swiss diplomat and traveler Henri Moser, preserved at the Bern Historical Museum.

The tapestries, presented to H.Moser in the 19th century by Kazakh Khan Baimukhammed, represent a valuable example of the artistic traditions of the Kazakh Khanate and serve as an important source for studying the history, culture, and socio-political structure of the nomadic people.

During their work, the experts conducted a detailed analysis of the condition of the tapestries and discussed with the leadership of the Bern Historical Museum the possibilities for restoration and the prospects for exhibiting these unique artifacts in other countries, including Kazakhstan.
