Bremen University Professor Rolf Knieper Receives Medal for Contributing to Kazakhstan’s Legal System Reform

FRANKFURT-AM-MAIN, 24 November 2020 – Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Germany, Dauren Karipov, while on a working visit to the federal land of Hessen, has met with Bremen University Law Professor Rolf Knieper, a civil law specialist renowned in Kazakhstan and Germany.

During the meeting Ambassador Karipov and Dr. Knieper, who is also an honorary professor of Kazakhstan’s Maksut Narikbayev KAZGUU University, discussed bilateral legal cooperation, including in the spheres of research and university education, and exchanged views about Germany’s experience in refining its civil and economic legislation. In this context the German legal scholar remarked highly of the legal reform process taking place in our country, aimed at upholding the principles of rule of law.

An award ceremony concluded the meeting, during which Ambassador Karipov, acting on the instructions of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, presented Professor Knieper with a jubilee medal on the occasion of the 25^th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s Constitution, as a sign of gratitude for his contribution to the development of our country’s constitutional foundations and strengthening of Kazakh-German cooperation.

From 1996 to 2005, Professor Knieper headed the Project of the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) entitled "Development of Private Law Legislation in Countries with Transitioning Economies", which served as a framework for implementing legal reforms in Kazakhstan’s civil and economic sectors.

For reference: The commemorative medal “25 Years of Kazakhstan’s Constitution” was established on the basis of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 8 February 2020 No. 261 as recognition for Kazakh and foreign citizens for their contribution to constitutional reforms. The corresponding decree on awarding Professor Knieper was signed by the President of Kazakhstan on 20 August 2020.
