A public Wi-Fi hotspot demonstration, connected via OneWeb non-geostationary satellite technology (NGSO), was held in the village of Basbek, Kostanay region. The event brought together Yekaterina Smyshlyayeva, a Member of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, alongside representatives of the Ministry of AI and Digital Development of the RK and Jusan Mobile.
Internet access was established in Basbek as part of the national project "Accessible Internet."
The initiative is led by the Ministry of AI and Digital Development of the RK. A central focus of the project is bringing connectivity to remote and sparsely populated villages where laying fiber-optic cables or installing mobile base stations is economically impractical. NGSO satellite technologies offer a viable alternative, delivering fast and reliable internet to communities where conventional solutions simply cannot reach.
To date, 328 villages have been connected under the national project using NGSO technology through the OneWeb system, with Jusan Mobile acting as the local operator in Kazakhstan.
"Our domestic providers put forward a technical solution, and everything is now operating within a clear legal framework. Most critically, this satellite receiver network is fully compliant with Kazakhstani law in terms of both security requirements and deployment conditions," said Majilis deputy Yekaterina Smyshlyayeva.
"This is the first infrastructure initiative under the 'Accessible Internet' national project to have been successfully brought to full completion - which happened last year," noted Damir Seisembekov, Chair of the Telecommunications Committee.
At the demonstration, Basbek residents had the opportunity to experience the network's performance for themselves: devices were connected to Wi-Fi, download and upload speeds were measured using Speedtest, and villagers made live video calls to family members in other cities and regions of the country.
"Before, the only way to reach our relatives was by landline through the city telephone network. Now, thanks to the internet, we have everything we need at our fingertips and can stay connected with the people we care about. My son lives in Germany, and now I can talk to him directly from home, right here in the village," said one Basbek resident.
