Cyber Temple, a Kazakhstani game development studio and member of Astana Hub, has released the game DarkSwitch. The project is already being compared to global hits in its genre. The game's soundtrack was composed by Japanese composer Akira Yamaoka, the creator of the music for the acclaimed Silent Hill series — marking one of the most notable collaborations with a cult artist in the history of the Kazakhstani gaming market.
The project has already attracted significant international attention: more than 230,000 users added the game to their wishlist before its release. DarkSwitch entered the top 5 most anticipated projects of the week in its genre and ranked 8th among all anticipated city-builders worldwide.
DarkSwitch is a city-building simulator and economic strategy set in a dark fantasy world. The player's task is to ensure the survival of a settlement by building a city around giant trees that protect against the deadly threat of an encroaching mystical fog. The game combines a thoughtfully crafted setting, expressive characters, and a narrative in which decisions affect not only the development of the city but also the fates of its characters.
According to CEO and founder Alexei Nazarov, more than 50 specialists worked on DarkSwitch, over half of whom are Kazakhstani. The development team also included specialists from CIS countries, Spain, Poland, Serbia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan.
"We put a great deal of heart, time, and effort into DarkSwitch. We worked on the game for more than four years, and we are already seeing the response. Being ranked 5th in the Upcoming Releases section on SteamDB just days before release is a strong result. It means that DarkSwitch is today one of the most anticipated games in the world among thousands of other projects. Depending on the success and momentum of the project, our plans include its further development — we plan to port the game to consoles and other devices, potentially release DLC, and pursue new projects both in development and on the publishing side," he said.
A key feature of the project is the vertical city architecture: limited space demands the creation of multi-level infrastructure. The game features more than 80 types of buildings and several technology tiers. Particular attention has been paid to the visual dimension — all artwork is hand-drawn, reinforcing the project's unique style and atmosphere.
The game targets highly competitive premium markets and already supports six localisation languages: English, French, German, Chinese, Russian, and Polish, as well as two voice-over languages — English and Russian. In building a global product, the studio continues work on the already announced localisation into Kazakh. It matters to the team that every time the game is downloaded, players worldwide see Kazakhstan's flag.
The release of DarkSwitch shows that Kazakhstani game development is entering a new stage. The country is building a pool of developers capable of creating products that are in demand on the global market and of competing for the attention of international audiences.
