Actors and Soldiers Reunite Onstage: “Aliya” Returns in a Triumphant Revival

On May 8, the M. Gorky State Academic Russian Drama Theatre in Astana hosted a powerful performance of the play “Aliya”, which has become a symbol of cultural unity and national remembrance. First premiered on March 6, the production continues to draw full houses and emotional acclaim.

What sets this performance apart is the unique collaboration between professional theater actors and servicemen of the National Guard, who together bring to life a deeply moving story that resonates with audiences across generations.

Dedicated to both Defender of the Fatherland Day (May 7) and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, “Aliya” is more than a theatrical production — it is a living tribute to courage, resilience, and the sacrifice of Kazakhstani women in wartime.

The title role was once again performed by Aizhuldyz Baglanova, whose heartfelt and powerful portrayal of Aliya — fragile yet unbreakable — captivated the audience. Her performance served as an emotional centerpiece, leaving no viewer untouched.

A standout moment of the evening was the rendition of the iconic song “Aliya”, performed by the Men’s Choir and the Demonstration Orchestra of the National Guard, marking 50 years since the song’s creation. The haunting melody stirred profound feelings of pride, sorrow, and gratitude among those in attendance.

With a full house, standing ovations, and tears from the audience, it is clear that “Aliya” continues to fulfill its powerful mission: to honor the heroes of the past, inspire today’s citizens, and unite people through memory and art.

This production has rightfully earned a distinguished place in the cultural life of the capital.
