Gender equality issues in Central Asian countries discussed at high level in Astana

A high-level sub-regional meeting ‘Five Years to the 2030 Agenda: Central Asian Perspectives on the 30th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’ was held in Astana on gender equality and the achievement of the fifth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 5). The event was organised by the Government of Kazakhstan together with UN Women.
The meeting was attended by members of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, heads of state bodies of Central Asia, representatives of international organisations and civil society.
The Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of the RK, Elvira Azimova, in her welcoming address to the participants of the sub-regional meeting, noted the importance of the rule of law in the protection of human rights and its impact on policies to empower women and combat violence. Elvira Azimova stressed that through constitutional control over the rule of the Basic Law, democratic politics and dialogue between the different branches of state power are promoted.
‘The high-level meeting in Astana was a powerful reminder of the progress of #Beijing30 and a call for collective action. This is a pivotal moment to move forward, mobilise regional solidarity and celebrate achievements on gender equality and women's rights,’ said the event organisers, represented by UN Women.
