The Constitutional Court upheld the global environmental action World Cleanup Day

Judges of the Constitutional Court and staff of its Office took an active part in the action to clean the bank of the Karasu River in Astana. The event took place on September 21, 2024 within the framework of the global initiative World Cleanup Day and the environmental campaign #EUBeachCleanup, organized by the EU Delegation and the Embassy of Estonia in Kazakhstan with the support of the Astana Akimat.

Bakyt Nurmukhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court, emphasized the importance of participation in such initiatives, noting that supporting initiatives to preserve the environment not only promotes environmental awareness, but also creates a sense of responsibility to future generations.

A total of about 300 people, including diplomats, eco-activists, representatives of government agencies, international organizations and residents of the capital, took part in the event. The participants collected a large number of plastic bottles, which were sent for recycling.

World Cleanup Day is one of the largest global movements, uniting millions of volunteers, governments and organizations. In 2023, the movement united 19 million participants from 198 countries and territories. Since 2024, World Cleanup Day has been declared an official UN Day, celebrated annually on September 20, and has now been added to the Calendar of International Days and Weeks. The idea originated in Estonia in 2008.

#EUBeachCleanup is a more focused global campaign organized by the EU and the UN to raise awareness about plastic pollution worldwide. In 555 events organized as part of the #EUBeachCleanup campaign in 2023, 45,700 people in 44 countries on all inhabited continents cleaned up plastic and other types of waste on beaches and the banks of rivers and bodies of water.
