The Constitutional Court participated in the discussion on the gender strategy of the countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus

Deputy Chairperson of the Constitutional Court Bakyt Nurmukhanov and Constitutional Court Analyst Amir Umarov spoke at the Regional Meeting on the Development and Implementation of a Gender Strategy for the International Legal Cooperation Network for Central Asia and the South Caucasus (CASC).

The dialogue platform brought together representatives of constitutional review bodies, law enforcement agencies of Central Asian and South Caucasus states, as well as representatives of international organizations and the non-governmental sector.

Participants exchanged knowledge, experience and views on gender mainstreaming in the criminal justice system.

Bakyt Nurmukhanov noted that gender equality as a provision prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He told the participants about the recent decision of the Constitutional Court, which recognized as unconstitutional the provision of the Code on Marriage (Matrimony) and Family, restricting the right of unmarried men to adoption. The Speaker also emphasized that the importance of gender equality was also taken into account in the formation of the judicial staff of the Constitutional Court, where 3 out of 11 judges are women, and 70% of the top and middle managers of the Constitutional Court Apparatus are women.
