Chairman of the Constitutional Council Kairat Mami sent a greeting to the participants of the British-Kazakh Society (BKS) Law group’s Inaugural Event on constitutional amendments.
Mark Beer, the Chairman of the BKS Law Group, moderated the webinar.
Kairat Mami informed participants about the main provisions of the current constitutional reform. He noted progressive changes in the field of human rights protection. These are the final consolidation of the decision to abolish the death penalty, the strengthening of the constitutional status of the Commissioner for Human Rights, the adoption of the constitutional law on the Prosecutor's Office and the transformation of the Constitutional Council into the Constitutional Court.
Now in our country, citizens will have the right to appeal to the Constitutional Court independently, the right to initiate a review of the constitutionality of laws is granted to the Prosecutor General and the Commissioner for Human Rights.
We believe that the establishment of the Constitutional Court with a broader list of subjects of appeal will be an important step in strengthening the foundations of the rule of law, said Kairat Mami in his welcoming speech, which was announced by the Secretary General of the Council Bakyt Nurmukhanov.
Chairman of the British-Kazakh Society Rupert Goodman addressed the forum participants with a welcoming speech and spoke in detail about the establishment of the BKS Law Group.
Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the UK Erlan Idrissov, Deputy Head of Mission in Kazakhstan Jonathan Layfield, Commissioner for Human Rights in Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova and General Counsel of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Michael Strauss also made reports.
The webinar was the first official event of the BKS Law Group, which was created to support the British-Kazakh Society in promoting relations between the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan on legal and judicial issues.
