55,000 people die from rabies every year. Approximately this figure is given in the statistical reports of the World Health Organization.
For 7 months of this year, 931 animal bites were registered in the Akmola region, the indicator per 100 thousand of the population is 126.3. The number of victims of bites has decreased, this can be seen from the figure of the last 2019 - 138.9. The number of hospitalized people also decreased, 3 versus 9 in 2019. Vaccinations were received by 931 people who sought help after being bitten. Most of all, the lower extremities suffered from them - 33.4%, hands - 24.2%.
The leaders in inflicting bodily harm were traditionally dogs - 706, cats - 207, horses - 2, other types of animals - 16.
The veterinary service of the region carried out work to catch and shoot stray animals. For the formed teams and their material support, funds were allocated in the amount of 39 million tenge. For preventive purposes, 27 people were vaccinated with rabies vaccine, in connection with their professional activities. This work, together with other factors, has reduced the number of bites.
This is very important, since the mortality rate of people with rabies, after being bitten or drooling by animals, is 100%. With such statistics, there is no point in discussing contraindications, but they, indeed, are insignificant for the vaccine used. Slight redness in the area of drug administration.
Acquired infection, transmission occurs through the saliva of animals infected with rabies: dogs, 60%, foxes, 24%, cats, 10% and others, inevitably leads to the death of a person if he does not receive timely medical care, before the development of the disease.
Severe damage to the nervous system can only be avoided by the timely administration of the rabies vaccine, and in case of penetrating bites, a combination of the vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin.
The older generation still remembers about 40 painful vaccinations. But this is already in the past. Since 1993, a culture of purified concentrated rabies vaccine has been used, which has reduced a single dose of vaccination, 1.0 ml, and the course of vaccination, to 5 intramuscular injections. They are administered to adults in the deltoid muscle, and to children in the outer surface of the thigh on the day of treatment and further, on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 30th days. Individual patients, for the formation of the required amount of antibodies in their bodies, can be given a sixth injection on the 90th day.
The vaccination course will be effective if it starts no later than the 14th day after the bite. At the same time, the rabies vaccine saves from the disease in 96-98% of cases.
Modern medicine has effective anti-rabies drugs, rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin, but the paradox is that people continue to die.
Approximately 75% of cases are the failure to seek medical help in case of bites and other contacts with infected animals, people frivolously do not attach serious importance to the mortal danger. For the same reason, 25% of deaths are recorded in patients who interrupted the course of vaccination and did not follow the established regime.
Unfortunately, a quarter of those with rabies are children aged 4 to 14 years.
The incubation period for rabies lasts from 10 days to 1 year or more.
Signs of rabies:
It begins with general malaise, dry mouth and decreased appetite, headache, slight fever, muscle cramps, sore throat, dry cough, symptoms such as nausea and vomiting may appear;
discomfort and increased sensitivity in 50-80% of patients at the site of the bite (burning, pulling pains, itching). The scar at the site of the former bite can become inflamed, red, and swollen. The patient has a pronounced depressed mood, he is withdrawn, and refuses to take food. This is accompanied by insomnia and nightmares, unreasonable feelings of anxiety and melancholy;
Within three days, anxiety and anxiety are added to hydrophobia. At the sound of pouring water, convulsions occur. Soon, at the sight of water, even at its mention, the patient develops a feeling of horror and painful spasms of the muscles of the pharynx and larynx, noisy breathing resembles short convulsive sighs. Even blows of air, noise, bright light, or touching the skin can lead to seizures. This causes aggression and other violent manifestations. The final stage of impaired consciousness, manifested convulsions and inability to motor functions, is death from respiratory paralysis.
The duration of the course of the disease usually does not exceed one week.
