Thick, black smoke was visible from several blocks away. He poured from the windows of the fourth floor of an apartment building. An excited crowd gathered in the courtyard: residents, neighbors, passers-by and just onlookers. Everyone looked up at the burning five-storey building.
Suddenly in one of the windows, through clouds of smoke, two kids appeared, frightened looking at the people below. They cried and called for help…
Fortunately, the children were noticed by Major Maksat Rysdavletov, who was returning to work from lunchtime. Passing the burning house, the officer saw a picture exactly as described in the poem «The Story of an Unknown Hero»:
Many people
Crowded on the panel.
The anxious people
Looked under the roof:
There from the window,
Through the fiery smoke
The child’s hands
Held out to them.
M. Rysdavletov, without hesitation, rushed to the rescue. Risking his own life, he began to save the children.
Ignoring the smoke and fumes, he burst into the entrance. Quickly climbing to the desired floor, he stumbled upon a locked iron door. Undaunted, Maksat climbed one floor higher and climbed through the neighbors’ balcony into the burning apartment.
There was a dense smoke screen. He couldn’t see anything, he had to go by touch. Having reached the last room, the officer saw the kids who were already choking on carbon monoxide.
Maksat lifted the exhausted children in his arms and carried them out onto the balcony. He brought them to senses. Then he began to put out the mattress in the bedroom, which turned out to be the place of the fire.
The fire brigade arrived shortly after. The people crowded around the house to gaze at the fire rushed the rescuers.
At this time, the mother of the children came up. Opening the apartment, she saw her son and daughter. They were all covered in soot, very frightened, but most importantly, they were alive.
Making sure that the children were no longer in danger, the officer hurried to the service.
According to the kids, shortly before that they played with matches and accidentally set fire to the mattress. The fire quickly spread to the carpet and furniture. But thanks to the courage of the border guard, everything ended well.
It would seem that in peacetime there is no place for a heroic deed in our life, but this is not so. A brave and determined person is not only a hero on the battlefield. A striking example of this was the brave rescue from certain death by Major Maksat Rysdavletov of a little boy and girl. Although the officer himself does not consider his courageous act a feat. According to him, he acted not for the sake of awards and universal recognition, but was guided only by the dictates of a civil and simply human duty.
They say that the hero collects the best and most valuable things that people strive for themselves. And by the kind of heroes they have, one can judge about society as a whole, about those values that are important and dear to them. The Border Guard Service has many of its heroes, of whom not only the border, but the whole country can be proud of.
