Digital labeling of tobacco products

Digital labeling of tobacco products has been mandatory in Kazakhstan since 1 October  2020, according to the Resolution on Mandatory Labeling of Tobacco Products that entered into force.

All tobacco products produced on the territory of Kazakhstan or imported to the Republic of Kazakhstan are marked with the DataMatrix code. This code contains information on tobacco products. It has "protection" digital information on the manufacturer, importer, serial number of batch of goods and other information necessary to control its movement.

The aim of this is to reduce the underground market of the tobacco products in the republic and to take out non-certified and low-quality products taken production.

The entire labeling process can be divided into main stages with mandatory actions of its participants:

  1. The manufacturer / importer marks the product with a digital code;
  2. The sale of marked goods is accompanied by an issuing the act of transfer and acceptance of the CM (control mark)
  3. A store confirms the act of transfer and acceptance of the CM by scanning the brand code on the product;
  4. When selling the product at the checkout, it is required to scan the marking code. In the system, the product is "taken out of circulation.
