Scientific and technological center for mining industry presented in Karaganda

Kazakhmys Corporation has launched an R&D Center in Karaganda, a platform for the development and implementation of solutions in the mining and metallurgical sector. It was created on the basis of the “KazHydroMed” company.

The center is equipped with rare equipment for Kazakhstan, which allows for accurate studies of the physico-chemical properties of ores and industrial waste.

The presentation of the center featured laboratories of mineralogy, chemical analysis, hydrometallurgy, as well as a mini-processing plant.

Representatives of the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan proposed to expand the center's activities to include polymetals and rare earths.

Kazakhmys announced its readiness to develop the site as an interdisciplinary scientific and technological hub open to new initiatives.

How did the idea come about

The R&D hub was a continuation of a series of hackathons conducted by Kazakhmys in cooperation with the Ministry of Science. The first one was held in Zhezkazgan, and in November 2024. The concept of the center was presented at a meeting of the Higher Scientific and Technical Commission under the Prime Minister, where the project was approved.

In February 2025, technologies for leaching copper ores were discussed at the second hackathon in Karaganda.

In March, a technical presentation of the future center was held at the KazHydroMed site.

What will the center do

Priority areas: technologies of underground and surface leaching, optimization of extraction and processing, extraction of metals from poor ores and waste, environmental solutions and digitalization. The center will become a platform for applied research, testing ideas selected at hackathons, and introducing new production solutions. One of the key accents is to increase the efficiency of metal extraction and attract international partners.

Kazakhmys invites mining companies and research organizations in Kazakhstan to join the project. The center is open for collaboration and can become the main platform for the development and implementation of technologies in the field of ore leaching and processing.
