The activities of the Department are regulated by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "on local government and self-government", "on physical culture and sports" and are aimed at implementing the following main programs:
- Concept of development of physical culture and sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2025;
- The program of development of the Karaganda region for 2016-2020;
- Densaulyk state program for healthcare development of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2016-2020.
There are 3,033 sports organizations and physical culture groups operating in the region, which cover more than 414,000 people.
In 2017, 9 billion rubles were allocated from the regional budget for the development of physical culture and sports. 167 million 186 thousand tenge (7 billion tenge was allocated in 2016). 129 million 745 thousand tenge).

96 sports are cultivated: 41 Olympic sports (with disciplines), 55 non – Olympic sports.
The National team of the Republic of Kazakhstan consists of 1,216 athletes of the region.
In 2017, 39,541 athletes of the region took part in 910 competitions of various ranks, including 112 regional, 521 national, and 277 international ones. As a result of participation in the competition, athletes won more than 8,190 medals (2,682 gold, 2,478 silver, 3,030 bronze).
93 competitions of international and national significance were held in the region.

The effectiveness of the management is determined by target indicators that reflect the following indicators:
- coverage of citizens engaged in physical culture and sports in the region, which amounted to 30.0 % or 414,166 people;
- coverage of children and adolescents from 7 to 18 years of age engaged in physical culture and sports in children's and youth sports schools, sports clubs of physical training of the total number of children and adolescents was 15.7% or 28,663 people.
8,940 mass sports events were held in the region. They took part 544 181 people. Including 9 regional sports Competitions with coverage of more than 27 thousand people.
National sports are successfully developed in the region, 11 types are cultivated (togyzkumalak, Sayat, baige, zhekpe-ZHEK, Kazak kuresi, asyk ATU, Kyz kuu, Tange Alu, audaryspak, kokpar, zhamby ATU), 42,065 people are engaged. The National team of the Republic of Kazakhstan consists of 16 athletes.
The number of disabled people in the region is 60,851, of which 3,577 are engaged in sports. 28 sports are cultivated. The national team of Kazakhstan includes 68 athletes.
There are 2,896 sports facilities in the region, including 1,111 in rural areas.
2 sports and recreation complexes were put into operation in Maikuduk on Belinsky street with a swimming pool and in Shakhterskoye village of nurinsky district.
There are 13 multifunctional hockey courts, 28 sports grounds and 5 Street Workout sports grounds.
