New research shows that the use of nuclear energy can contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change in some countries

According to research conducted at the national level within the framework of a three-year project coordinated by the IAEA, countries such as Armenia, Ghana, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine have significant potential in terms of using nuclear energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate change goals, including the goals agreed at the COP26 Climate Summit.

The data obtained during the implementation of this coordinated research project highlights the possibility of wider use of nuclear energy to support more ambitious national goals to combat climate change in accordance with the requirements of the «Glasgow Climate Pact», agreed during COP26 (COP26), held in November last year. About 30 countries have included nuclear energy in the plans submitted in accordance with the 2015 Paris Agreement, which consider both the immediate goals (up to 2030) agreed within the framework of the so-called «nationally determined contributions» and longer-term strategies to achieve zero emissions. The results of the work of the PKI reflect the growing interest in nuclear energy among countries seeking to achieve larger goals to combat climate change.
