Information on the death of a Caspian seal puppy in the Caspian Sea

On March 1, 2023, a video clip was posted on the Instagram network, on which a dead seal specimen was recorded. According to the commentary accompanying the video, the carcass was found on the shore of the Caspian Sea in the 15th microdistrict of Aktau.

According to the current Interaction Scheme, all members of the Working Group were promptly notified (local executive bodies, specialized scientific organizations, the Center for the Study and Rehabilitation of the Caspian Seal, the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, the Kazakhstan Agency for Applied Ecology, the Research and Production Center for Microbiology and Virology, the Veterinary Service of the region, the departments of ecology and police, the environmental Prosecutor's Office).

At the same time, a working group headed by the head of the Department of the Fish Inspection Department for the Mangystau region of the Zhaiyk-Caspian inter-regional basin Inspection of Fisheries with employees of the Center for the Study and Rehabilitation of the Caspian Seal, Veterinary Inspection, Department of Ecology and Environmental Police for the Mangystau region went to the place of the seal discovery.
Upon arrival at the site, the Department of Ecology of the Mangystau region took samples of water and air.

The fact of the seal's death was registered by the environmental police of Aktau on March 1, 2023 for No. 234710030005357. Within the framework of this case, the causes and other circumstances of the death of the Caspian seal will be established.

According to preliminary data, the dead seal is a squirrel (puppy). Visual examination of the seal's body revealed no signs of physical damage.

Currently, the carcass of the discovered seal is being stored in the Mangystau branch of the Republican Veterinary Laboratory.
