In the period from November 7 to December 3, 2022, in Tupkaragan District of Mangistau region, during raid activities on the coast of the Caspian Sea, the carcasses of 172 dead seals were found.
Балық to identify the causes of death of seals, the committee of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted relevant work with various scientific organizations: "Institute of Hydrobiology and ecology", "research and production center of Microbiology and virology" LLP, "Agency of Applied Ecology of Kazakhstan" LLP, the Center for research and rehabilitation of the Caspian seal, as well as interested state bodies: Department of ecology of Mangystau region, territorial divisions of the Committee for Veterinary Control and supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
📊Based on the results of the examination, a working group consisting of representatives of scientific organizations and competent state bodies concluded that the main cause of the death of many individuals of Caspian seals found in November 2022 is virus-related pneumonia during the period of autumn concentration of animals in the Kazakh part of the sea, as a result of an outbreak of mixed influenza and morbillivirus infection. Chronic poisoning of marine animals with immunotoxic elements and compounds contributes to a decrease in their immunity and an increase in susceptibility to infectious diseases due to the general resistance of the body.
📌Thus, the death of Caspian seals, discovered in November 2022, is pneumonia caused by an outbreak of viral infections caused by weakened immunity. One of the reasons for the decrease in immunity is pollution of animal habitats.
