In April 2021, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan approved a Program for the development of fisheries for 2021-2030, the main purpose of which is to increase the volume of fish cultivation, as well as the growth of domestic consumption and export of fish products.
However, when growing fish, one of the problems is veterinary safety, since some types of fish planting material (fertilized caviar) and fish feed are imported and at the same time there are high risks of importation of various fish diseases.
In this regard, at the initiative of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the support of the World Organization for Animal Health (VOZH), an assessment of veterinary medicine and the health of aquatic animals of Kazakhstan was organized by international experts of VOZH.
VOZH experts visited fish farms of Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions, Balkhash-Alakol and Zaisan-Ertis inter-regional basin inspections of fisheries, Scientific and Production Center of Fisheries, veterinary laboratories, agricultural universities, and also got acquainted with the main regulatory legal acts in the field of veterinary medicine and aquatic animal health in order to assess the activities of veterinary services.
Based on the results of the assessment by the experts of the WHO, recommendations will be given containing a complete overview of the state of the veterinary service in terms of aquatic animals, an assessment of its effectiveness and identification of strengths and weaknesses. These recommendations will make it possible to improve the veterinary service system in the field of aquatic animal health using a number of proven tools and methods.
