Kazakhstan signed a statement on minimization of highly enriched uranium

In the framework of 64th session of the General conference of the IAEA signed a Joint statement of the Ministry of energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National administration for nuclear security of the Department of energy of the United States of America on minimization of highly enriched uranium, reports the press service of ME RK.

As part of the Global initiative to reduce the nuclear threat, the work to convert research reactors is underway in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The main goal of this work is the non-proliferation of nuclear materials by eliminating high enriched uranium (HEU) and converting research reactors to low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel. The projects are implemented jointly with US organizations that note the high level of scientific and technical potential and competence of organizations in Kazakhstan to perform this complex task.

Taking into account the importance of the project implementation, a joint statement of the Ministry of energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National nuclear safety administration of the United States Department of energy on minimizing highly enriched uranium was signed during the 64th session of the IAEA General conference.

The parties confirm their intention to continue joint actions to support the common goals of minimizing HEU, ensuring nuclear security and strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime.
