Actions in case of an earthquake

If you are at home when the tremors begin:

"LIE DOWN, PROTECT YOURSELF and DON'T MOVE." If you are not near a solid dining or writing table, then lie down on the floor against the inner wall and cover your head and neck with your hands.
Stay away from windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large household appliances and cabinets filled with heavy objects.
If you are indoors, then stay there during an earthquake.
If you are in bed during an earthquake, then stay in it and cover your head with a pillow.
In multi-storey buildings, be prepared for the fact that fire alarms and sprinklers may start working.
Do not go out on the balcony, do not light a fire, open the door and stand in the doorway or hide in a safe place.
If you use a wheelchair, lock the wheels and cover your head.

If you are outside when the tremors start:

Go to an open place if you can do it safely. Stay away from power lines, buildings and trees.
If you are driving, then turn at the edge of the road and stop. Do not stop under overhanging dangerous places (for example, under bridges, power lines or large road signs).
Watch out for dangerous objects that may fall, find the rescue headquarters and register.

After the end of the earthquake:

Check the people around you to see if they are injured. Give them first aid
Do not move seriously injured people, except when they are in imminent danger. Keep them warm, cover them with blankets or extra clothing.
Evacuate buildings by stairs, do not use elevators.
Check around yourself if there are any dangerous conditions nearby, such as fires, fallen power lines, gas leaks and damage to buildings.
If you have fire extinguishers and are trained to use them, then put out small fires immediately.
Avoid broken windows.
Be extremely careful around spilled hazardous materials such as bleach, lye, garden chemicals, paint, gasoline or other flammable liquids. If in doubt, then leave this place.

If you are stuck in the ruins:

Move as little as possible so as not to raise dust.
Cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief or clothes.
Tap on a pipe or wall so that rescuers know where you are.
Use the whistle, if it is at hand. Shout only as a last resort.
