Atyrau region is located in the west of Kazakhstan In tectonic terms, the territory of Atyrau region is confined to the southern edge of the deep Caspian depression of the ancient East European platform. Precambrian heterogeneous folded basement, lies at depths of 6-8 km in the zones of arched uplifts and up to 9-10 km in the saddles separating them. A powerful salt-bearing stratum of the Lower Permian (Kungurian) age with a thickness of up to 2 km divides the sedimentary cover into subsalt and suprasalt structural-formation complexes. The subsalt complex, composed of rocks of the Middle Devonian - Lower Permian, contains large megawalls, sedimentation platforms, erosion-tectonic uplifts with an amplitude of up to 1.5 km. The largest hydrocarbon deposits are connected with the subsalt and reef buildings. The suprasalt complex includes deposits from the Upper Permian to Quaternary sediments. The regional structure of the suprasalt complex is complicated by numerous salt dome uplifts, the arches of which are broken by local tectonic disturbances. The structure of the surface is dominated by flat areas located below the level of the world ocean, from 0 m to the current level of the Caspian Sea at - 27.7 m.
It occupies an area of 118,600 km2, accounting for 4.3% of the republic's area. The region stretches from west to east for more than 600 km, and from north to south for 350 km.
By land, the region borders the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation in the west, the West Kazakhstan Region in the north, the Aktobe region in the northeast and the Mangystau region of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the southeast. The total length of the region's borders by land is 1949.5 km, including 449.6 km with the Russian Federation. From the south, the territory of the region is washed by the waters of the Caspian Sea, along which it borders with four Caspian states: the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Turkmenistan. The length of the coastline within the region is 1050 km with the background level of the Caspian Sea at 27.7 m .
According to the administrative-territorial division, 154 settlements are located on the territory of the region. Including: 2 cities: the city of Atyrau - regional significance and the city of Kulsary - district significance (Zhyloysky district), 4 villages of district significance: the village of Zhanakaraton (Zhyloysky district), the village of Inderborsky (Indersky district), the village of Makat, the village of Dossor (both Makatsky district), as well as 64 rural districts (Atyrau – 7, Zhyloysky - 5, Indersky - 6, Isataysky - 7, Kurmangazinsky - 19, Kyzylkoginsky - 10, Makatsky - 1, Makhambetskiy - 9).
